February Buyer's Report
February is a great time of the year because we start seeing our daylight hours increase and the sun fighting its way out. Fruits change in all different seasons, but Strawberries and Easy Peelers go through the biggest changes this time of year.
Strawberries
I love February for Strawberries because, believe it or not, it is the start of the summer Strawberry season. Up until now we’ve been having particularly hard and sweet Egyptian Strawberries, but as the summer rolls in, the Moroccan and Spanish strawberries get a chance to shine. These variants are a lovely bright and have far less green on them. This is a particularly great season, as I get the pleasure of trying these lovely red gems when I’m buying them in the early morning.
Raspberries
This time of year the Raspberries are quite firm and have more of a tangy taste than usual. Typically, this type is ideal for decoration on cakes and all kinds of desserts.
Blueberries
Blueberries are amazing at the moment. They’re really full in flavour and have a lovely taste. Usually you find them quite larger than other seasons too.
Blackberries
Blackberries, like it’s berry-brothers, are nice and big too. They’re firm, which means they’re great for decorating cakes and desserts.
Easy Peeler
As we’re slowly switching seasons, we’ll be seeing our Spanish Satsumas and Clementines phasing out. It’s always sad to see them go as they’re so delicious. It’s not all bad news as something to look forward to are the Moroccan Nardicort. They’re a type of easy peeler, which have a slight tang to them. They’re very easy to peel and incredibly juicy.
Bananas
Bananas are my favourite fruit and they are by the most difficult to handle, especially this time of year. We have to be very delicate with them to ensure that they all come out with the best taste. Top Tip: This is usually when they’re yellow and have slightly green tips! I’ve got to put together my 50 years of experience to get these right every time, but it’s always worth it to get the perfect bananas.
Stone fruit
We’re also switching our Plum Season, moving away from the hard and slightly sour plums that have the white centre. South American Variants are starting to come into season, which are my personal favourite plums. They’re lovely and juicy, with a soft skin and purple centre, and taste exactly what a plum should taste like.
Grapes
The South American Grape Season is starting. This means that large grapes (both red and green) hit our markets. These grapes taste impeccable, and we can’t wait for them to make their way into our boxes!
Red Apples
In season for our red apples are currently English Braeburns and Royal Galas. The famous Braeburns look and taste fantastic, with a distinct crunch and very juicy flesh. Our Royal Galas apples are just as great, but are a little bit more softer than their Braeburn relatives.
Green apples
Golden Delicious and Spanish Granny Smiths are the main two variants of green apples you’ll find in your orders right now. The Golden Delicious are some-what yellow and are wonderfully juicy with a sweet taste. The Spanish Granny Smiths however are a more dark green pigment and are far more crispy, and you’ll notice that they have a slight bit of a bite to their taste.
