World Environment Day 2025

World Environment Day 2025

World Environment Day takes place every year on the 5th of June. It’s been celebrated since the first world environment day in 1973. It encourages everyone to be aware of environmental issues and take actions toward a more sustainable future. Here you can learn about some simple sustainability ideas for the office and how we can use them to protect our environment.

5 Ways to make a workplace more environmentally friendly

1 – Increasing Energy Efficiency

Reducing your energy usage, or switching to more efficient devices are some great ways to move to a greener workplace. You can replace traditional light bulbs with energy efficient LED bulbs or have motion sensors installed in less frequented areas. This means that when they’re not in use, the lights will turn off and save energy. You can take this a step further and invest in smart thermostats, where you can optimise heating as well as cooling based on occupied areas throughout the work schedule.

2 – Waste Reduction

Reducing the amount of waste is a great way to reduce the usage of disposable goods. You can go paperless by moving to exclusively digital communication and documentation. Having a solid recycling system is important too, this can range from separated recycling bins to even more sophisticated recycling procedures.

If your company uses reusable containers such as plastic cups for water or coffee, then you can purchase reusable bottles or coffee cups. Most of the time, you can get a discount for having reusable coffee cups too at some coffee chains! And if you can’t make do without your disposable items, then you can switch to biodegradable disposables, which won’t harm the planet.

3 – Mindful Purchasing

It’s always good to monitor your supply chain and only purchase from suppliers that prioritise sustainability and monitor their environmental impact. For example, we ensure our Fruit Boxes only use biodegradeable paper and are in fully recyclable boxes.  This also puts pressure on other suppliers to make and reflect on their own green-schemes and spread the effect.

Purchasing in bulk helps minimise lots of packaging waste, so it’s always to get bigger and fewer deliveries. This comes with the added benefit of bulk-discounts too!

4 – Green Commuting

Changing the way staff travel to work is a great way to minimise greenhouse gas emissions. Companies can embrace cycling by adding cycling racks near their office or promote hybrid/electric car purchases by having parking spaces with charging stations closer to the building.

5 – Carbon Offsetting Program

Sometimes it’s just too difficult to properly move into greener practices, and that’s where Carbon Offsetting programs can be a great tool. It allows organisations (or individuals) to invest in projects whose goals are to reduce or capture greenhouse gasses. A great example of this is projects that plant a tree for every sale you make.

What We Do

At Fruit For The Office, we put a big priority on sustainable practices. Since 2019 we’ve proudly sent zero waste to landfills. All of our waste is either reused internally, sent to CityHarvest who reclaim the food, or composted.

Keeping a constant check on our appliance usage as well as investing in awareness schemes has kept our facilities energy efficient and our staff mindful about the environment.

We’re also constantly working on our Transport Services, which prioritise on efficient scheduling. By 2030, we’re hoping to have an exclusively electric fleet operating all across London and Greater London.

You can read more about what we can do over on our Environment & Sustainability page.
